Yes to Yessie

To say Jessie Reyez has a connection to and appreciation for her fans, is a gross understatement.

At her show in Oahu, Hawaii at the Republik on May 27, Reyez put on an emotional, entertaining performance. Reyez had fans laughing, crying, dancing, and singing throughout the whole night. Those who knew the lyrics were belting each word, and the newcomers (who Reyez gave a shoutout to) were just as invested in the way their eyes stayed glued to the stage. Even the security, who hadn’t heard of Reyez prior, were enjoying their job a little extra this night.

Reyez’ interactions with the crowd felt like the moments at comedy shows where the comedian picks people from the crowd, yet this was more of a safe space. In a sea of hundreds of people at a sold out show, Reyez made the space feel intimate.

Reyez made a point to share her advocacy for women, and inspire them to triumph through strife. She even gave a shoutout to the men that act as allies and protect and advocate for women. This timely, and timeless sentiment seemed to be appreciated by the crowd with loud responses of “woos” and “f**k yeahs.”

From her cheeky banter, to soulful bellows and everything in between, Reyez moved a crowd and provided a wholesome, passion-filled experience for the concert-goer.
